How does dihydroxyacetone work on the skin?
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is the primary active ingredient in sunless or self-tanning products. Chemically, DHA is a three-carbon sugar that remains stable within a pH range of 4 to 6. When applied to the skin, 96% of DHA reacts with free amino acids found in sweat and keratin, forming a brown pigment called melanoidin. This pigment mimics the tanning effect seen in people with lighter skin tones. Notably, DHA can stain all areas of the skin, including the palms and soles.
